Can I have black powdercoated wheels stripped down & then repowdercoated to a gunmetal?:confused I can provide an existing gunmetal rim for the color match.
Thanks!

Go to armour coatings in mequon, talk to Kevin. I had the centers of my volks stripped and powdercoated black, turned out perfect:thumbsup Cost me like 180, it may cost more to strip your wheels because they are already powdercoated:confused

I wonder then if it'd be cheaper for the refinish to have them shipped polished then?

Thanks for the lead I'll call them!:thumbsup

Yeah I can pretty much gaurantee that! You will save time and money taking them a set of uncoated wheels, they don't strip powdercating in house, at least they didn't when I was there last year.

If the powdercoat is fine but you just want to change the color, you dont have to have them stripped. just pc right over the old color. I do it all the time.

Make sure you shop around man, thats all I gotta say.

Some places are ing insane on prices. I was doing some research and theres places that want like a hundo or more to do a set of VC's.

If you find a good place with reasonable prices, let me know, I need a mess of stuff done.

Also, you can buy aircraft stripper at any parts place and strip the existing powdercoat yourself to save you time and cash.

I'll be receiving the 2 gunmetal rims for the front early this week. Then I had them send me the 17x11's polished- not black powder coated so the initial work to strip before recoating is already done. I should be seeing those later this or early next week.

How did they turn out?

I didnt have them coated yet.
But... while waiting for several places to get back to me regarding finishing them I can tell you so far I'm the most impressed with Hy-Tec Coatings in Waukesha.
As you know my front rims already came in finished & cleared and my rears are polished. Mike from there is working w/ the place in FL the wheels came from to find out what paint vendor was used so they can use the same or as close to as possible for a match. But at this point with amount of research they're putting into this BEFORE they even want the rims, they'll prob get my business. When there I saw some examples of thier work and was impressed & they can turn rims around in a few days- which is good for me because I have a tight timeframe to get this done now.

Who are you asking? For what?

Dont know how much yet since we dont have the exact color yet. They'll also have to mask off for the polished outer lip which is extra labor. I'll let ya know once I have a #. I think thier typical rim is like $50/ea

if we're asking about pricing, how much were the valve covers in the wrinkle? i've got a spare that i'd like coated, to try and clean up the engine bay a little...

So... you think there's hope for my rims?
Only the polished lip is pitted/ruined, the spokes are mint.
The spokes can be removed as they are 2-piece.

(worst one- yes it's "clean")

I think it was $50 for both covers and the top and bottom of the air cleaner.

You dont need a powdercoater, you need stripper and a polish job.

I dropped them off this afternoon w/ Mike.
I made a judgement call to have them use one of thier inhouse colors thats just tiny bit darker that the color of the fronts because (go figure:rolleyes: ) the place I got the wheels from isn't letting us find out who coated the wheels. We planned on using the same vendor & exact color. Those pricks are only telling us that they get coated overseas.
They just have to mask off the outer part of the lip so it stays shiny before coating & they'll be done early next week.

Todays' s update...

I pulled the wheels from Hy-Tec yesterday after talking to Mike (owner)several times over the last few days. They were unable to securly mask off the outer lip so the the powdercoat wouldnt run and also found that their closest match wouldnt be close enough. So we mutually agreed to not have them do the work.
By no means am i going to slam them. Mike tried several times to get it to his satisfaction & was not happy. I'm glad he was honest w/ me and didnt screw me around.
We (Wayne, Sean & I) then took them up to Northstar Coating to have them look at the wheels and they came to the same conclusion that Hy-Tec did. So we got a tour of the place instead. :thumbsup Steve the owner was great

Then we called Crystal Auto Body and told them what was going on and they took them in. They are going to liquid paint them- not powdercoat and since they've done this style wheel before so they're not worried at all about them not looking pefect. Theyre going for a perfect color match & going to seal them up real good, so I'll get the longevity Im looking for. :banana Will be ready next week.

I have no way to find out what the exact color is called, much less find any info on the paint manufacturer so they're going to do the paint match in the shop w/ one of the finished wheels I left behind. These guys are gooooood- same ones that fixed my ........
