First off, please dont tell me to lose Vista. I dont wanna hear it.

Second, I have my desktop PC running XP, the printer is hooked to that. I have a new laptop running Vista and want to have the printer shared to use with the laptop. I went into the PC's control panel and enabled sharing on the printer, but the laptop wont detect it. The laptop does connect wireless through the router, so that works good. Any help? Thanks-Dan

Shouldn't be a problem as long as both PCs are in the same workgroup...

It's probably the firewall... try this (in Vista):

-In the system tray, right-click on the 'network' icon an open 'network and sharing center'.
Make sure that 'network discovery' is on.

-In the same line as the network label, there a 'customize' button. 'Click customize' and set the network to private.

This works for most machines that are on the same switch/hub.

If the above does not work go to the windows firewall (located on the bottom left of the network and sharing screen)and click 'change setting'.
The last tab should be 'advanced. Click on this tab and remove the the checkmark from 'Local area connection'

Let me ask this-

Its a Dell printer. Is it necessary then for there to be a Dell driver for this printer? I checked Dell's website, no Vista driver for this model.

that is probably the problem, especially if its an older printer

You can still use XP drivers for hardware that doesn't have Vista drivers yet... did you try my suggestion up there ^^^ ?

My mother just got her new laptop with vista, so I will be configuring all that crap soon enough. Hopefully there is more info in here next time I check ;-)

I'd try the other thing first.
It should prompt you to install drivers once it can actually see the other printer though.

OK, I tried what you said. Nope. I did notice, Windows Firewall is/was shut off, still is.

I'm gonna try d-loading the XP drivers onto the Vista box.

it's shut off on which computer?
I pretty much guarantee it will see the printer if the firewall is off on both computers.

If both are already off... then you have other issues, like file/print sharing not enabled or some service is turned off... god it could be alot of things.

99% of the time it's firewall related though.

Oh, and for the love of god, please tell me you don't have Norton's A.V. running on either computer :goof

The windows firewall on the Vista machine is turned off, it is tuned on on the XP machine.

I think I'm throwing in the towel.
