Forum I found it at link (http://www.outlawracing.com/MESSAGEFORUMS/tabid/53/forumid/1/postid/5229/view/topic/Default.aspx)
local paper link (http://www.hattiesburgamerican.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070220/NEWS01/702200308/1002)
Scott Williams, 29 died when his foxbody mustang went through the metal guard rails and hit the H beams sideways on the score boards at Hub City Dragway in Hattiesburg, MS.

He did have a rollcage and was wearing a harness. He still was ejected from car. Supposedly all the NHRA tracks have to update to concrete walls this year to be legal. Anyone know anything about this. Non NHRA tracks holding 10.5 Outlaw events. Is this an example of why GLD is changing? I'm not in the know on this stuff.

heard about it a couple days ago from one of his fellow friends/racers...

very sad. but those outlaw classes are what causes it. just TOO fast for the situation. was it a 25.5 car, or was it just a 10pt cage? that stuff is the important things to look at. so we have THIS, as well as that '74 GTO at orlando that launched off the flimsy guardrails. glad to hear they are changing things.

such a sad situation. after last year, and some discussions with friends, my car won't be raced until it's got quite a few safety upgrades.

Yea, this sucks Andy. I read about it on another site, from the accounts of his friends.

We had those NHRA-spec concrete walls installed at GLD while we were still IHRA. Our guardrails were over 40 years old. The concrete is MUCH safer.

Quite a wakeup. No doubt.

that car is torn apart! i wonder if a "bigger/better" roll cage would have helped?!? i mean that car is literally in pieces!

story goes i guess the car got loose and launched off the guardrails into the scorebord post which cut the car in half. gotta read that link for specifics.

I don't think any car, regardless of the amount of tubing in it, could of faired any better. It's the "I" beam holding up the scoreboard that did him in. The car was shreded and the post didn't even give. I hope that racetrack is shutdown til they fix the problem. I feel for the family, not the way I'd want to leave this earth.

just to see what impacting an H beam can do to a car is scary...and by the looks of it the roll cage was a pretty decent one. its just too bad RIP!
