My dad and I were going through some of his old things and we came across this. It's an old news paper article about hwy 100. I will say, some things never change.

Note, The picture of the GTO is taken in oscars parking lot. It used to be called the Red Barn.

I just thought it was cool and wanted to share it with you guys.:thumbsup

I also found it kind of cool how much hwy has grown. They only used the stretch between Greenfield and oklahoma.

HAHA!!

Thats before it was illegal to cruise.

I still remember the day they made it illegal. it was all over the news.

I was out at the "strip" for a year before it became illegal. And even then there was a heavy police presence.

It just make me wonder what came first. Was there problems, or did the police cause the problems?

The pictures are kind of hard to figure out. I don't know exactly where the first picture was taken. It's odviously before hwy 100 was as built up as it is now.

I remember doing the last QFM cruises. The last one was in the rain wasn't it?
Also remember the night QFM changed its format. I was working for Fuchs and had the Daytona at the time. It was a wierd & erie drive home in the rain with 'nothing' to listen to.

Man what memories! 1978... I was a Junior in High School and cruised the Highway in a 1969 GTO. Things were actually a lot different back than, and yea, "Oscar's" was a Red Barn...
In those days the "Norf Side" action was hot and heavy. Races on Villard and on Tower... The "cruise loop" went a LONG way, people didn't just hang out on The Highway. The loop went from Highway 100 to Tower, Brown Deer Park, Villard Street, The Milky Way in Glendale (Now Kopps) and the lakefront back then was also entirely different, and of course 27th street. There was action everywhere. Chicks, cars, parties ALL OVER.

Definatly remember the street nat's. That shi.t was crazy. They would make the turn in front of HUB. At the turn they started putting down bleach and doing burnouts. Didn't last to long before the cops chased us out of the lot.

Great find! I like the part where he pays $1600 for the car and a whopping $1500 to "restore it to original condition"!! I know you did'nt make near the money back then,, but it just seems more relative than it is today. Thanks for sharing.:thumbsup

Ha...takes me back to the days growing up...

I grew up in FL, and in the late 70's, early 80's trucks were pretty popular in our parts. The scene down there was such that everyone went to paticular beaches and drag raced among the dunes. Literally, my dad would race with my brother and I in the back, holding on for dear life. He raced with a 79 Plymouth Trailduster.

There was a street scene, but it was considerably smaller than what was likely around here.

Man, those "old days" of the HWY were so much fun !

I put 3500 miles on my Galaxie over the summer of 1985 out there !

Today I avoid driving on HWY 100 during a cruise night as much as possible.....I still will go out ot Culvers on the weekends but, I park my car now as it's just too crazy out there......

Here is a car that was a "real famous street racer" during the years I was cruising.....

Dave Senderhauf's legendary 1967 Buick street racer.....

We used to call him " 3rd. lane" as he was always driving in the far right lane looking for a race......With todays HP standards he would not be considered a feared street racer but, back in the day that car was a tuff customer......

It is amazing how times change...I started cruising real heavily in the sumer of 97, and then came back in 98 and 99....even then we could sit in one spot all night (the clark station) and just shoot the shit and have a good time....then things really changed, and it wasnt the same....seems like it was a steady decline since they made it illegal (my older sisters still talk about that).

Cool article. I remember showing it to my parents, because they couldn't understand the whole cruising thing. Those were the days...

I remember when that Young America On Wheels show came to town. Standing in the middle of the highway right in front of the Southtown theater stopping cars in a big puddle of beer, water and cooler ice and egging them on into doing burn-outs. That was probably the most lawless mob atmosphere I've ever been a part of...at least until I started hanging out at Tower.:devil There was one car I remember from that show, a blue mid 60's Corvette with a cross-rammed smallblock and a big, chromed battle axe sticking out of the back. The Executioner was the name on it, I believe. These days, it would probably get laughed off of the street, but back then I was pretty impressed.

That Panda GTO SUCKED. As Ron said, the car was totally ghey, not to mention the disco reject that owned it, lol.

Dave Senderhoff's Buick was a bad-ass car back then. Him and his old man were quite a team. "The Boy and The Beard" were their nicknames. :rolf I remember the very first time I was up at Tower, he was racing guys and winning running regular street radials on Magnum 500's.(or whatever Buick called that style wheel) He was using VHT and damned near lifting the front wheels off the ground. The combination of Buick torque and excellent weight transfer really worked wonders on that car. Dave was really good at lining up races because he was a cocky fvcker that you just wanted to shut-up.

You guys saying Ron looks like Jesus, LOL! IIRC, one of his nicknames when he was working at Flintrop's was something like 5ft Mini-Jesus or something else along those lines...:rolf :rolf :rolf

damm now i feel even older knowing jingles from back then.....

Its funny you guys bring this up. I showed my Dad this thread and then he showed me a MILWAUKEE JOURNAL dated back to JUNE 26th, 1974 that he made the FRONT page of in his 1969 SS CHEVELLE! Quoted by my Dad "I had the fastest Chevelle in downtown Milwaukee on cruise nights. I had a Corvette LT-1 4 bolt main chevy pushing 400HP with a Mickey Thompson Dual Quad 2 GOLD Velocity Stacks that I had to take my hood off to drive the car. I had a Mr Gasket inline speed shifter, I never took my foot off the gas when I was shifting in a race! The Journal picked me for the FRONT PAGE article. on 6.26.1974"

Its not the greatest quality scan but you get the picture!

Highway is a piece of living history as much as others want to dispute it. Our kids & grandkids will be running out there too and telling stories & tall tails of our own schenanagains. Peter Egan from Road & Track refers to it once in a great while as he's from WI.
