Well basically the aircraft had enough area to produce lift and the were going fast enough for it. Its been proven with the F-4 Phantom give it enough power even a brick can fly!!!!

with the amount of power that plane will produce at full power make it about the same as a rocket. he could control with it the elevators and small aleron input. basically it became a guided rocket.
