OC-3 = Optical carrier line. the 3 stands for the level of it. OC-3 is 155.52 Mbit/s. That is what we call fast.

Opterons are AMDs (cpu maker) high end server/multimedia workstation chip. Setting them up in a dual format is fast.

4U rack mount case is refering to the ammount of space the case takes up in a rack.

you know what i give up.

You can install a PCI video card. Depending on how your motherboard works you can either get a single head card and use both the onboard and PCI for dual monitors or get a dual head card and disable the onboard video. PCI video cards are slow, so don't expect to play any 3D intense video games, but it would work just fine for your everyday use.

Radeon 9250 PCI Dual Head Card (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814103167) $65.99 or $45.99 after rebate. Add any monitor you want and voila dual monitors for much less than half the cost of buying a new motherboard, video card and monitor. Don't forget that when installing a new motherboard you will have to do a windows repair 99% of the time, unless you get one with the same chipset as your existing motherboard and even then it's on a case-by-case basis. If the onboard card works in conjunction with this card you could even run triple screens if you wanted.

Myles
01-31-2007, 03:29 PM
well, actually, if you could pull your prices for the dual board and 2 opterons, and if they are good enough, i might come by and grab them a little down the road. But thats your choice, i wont make you do any work.

No dig on you, but this is a typical MPC store response to many of my computer questions.

What I want is for a HDD like I said:

Like this one:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817185006

I have one for a 2.5" laptop drive, I want one for 3.5 standard hard drives... must support IDE AND SATA interface hard disks.

You'll have to talk to the telephone company about getting a fiber line run to your house for OC-3. Of course you should know all Dual Opteron server boards will use registered ECC DDR2. You'll have a hard time finding a 4U chassis with only 8 hot swap bays, really you should be fine with a 2U chassis with 9 hot swap bays. I'd recommend going with SAS instead of SATA 3.0 for the caliber of system you're looking to do. You say you want "8 terabyte drives" does that mean you want 8 terabytes of storage or 8 1 terabyte drives? This can greatly change the equation since I assume you'll be running a RAID array and if you want to run a mirror or RAID-5(rcommended) you won't get 8 1 terabytes of space on 8 terabyte drives. :thumbsup :durr :loser

Actually im gonig to wait for verizon to get their fiber lines for home users to wisconsin. And no i have found several 4u chassis that have 9 hot swap bays (i was just hitting numbers) SATA will be fine in a stripped setup. And yes 8 1 terabyte drives. I generally wasnt looking for 8 tb total. In theroy i dont even need that much space. I am building a machine generally to do my rendering only. And i just realized that they only use registered ddr 400, so my original claim for ddr2 was pointless.

Oh, you were being serious LOL? I wouldn't stripe that many drives its just asking for a disaster, you have to figure the chance of failure multiplies with each drive added. I'm unsure if there are actually any terabyte drives available right now. 750GB is the largest that Seagate offers and personally I wouldn't use any other brand. 12 750GB drives in a RAID 5 will give you 8.2 terabytes total capacity and if a drive fails you can replace it without suffering data loss.

yes video rendering, as i said before i wouldnt use that many drives. I wasnt being serious in the original post, only serious thing would have been the main board and the proc. But its not overkill, when you have to render a full DVD it takes awhile. Network rendering makes my life easier.

How do I know if that will work with my PC? I do an ass load of photo editing and the 19" monitor is just not cutting it anymore. 3 would be great, but 2 I think will more more then enough for now.

pci, is slow as shit as he said above, most mobo from big box manufacturers do NOT support onboard with pci card running dual monitor, just a heads up!!!

I would get that card that he posted, and run that in dual monitor vs pci and onboard!

btw I can get that card for around 66-68 ( yes it more than 65 ) but then you dont have to pay shipping :)

Ahh, gotcha. We used to do a lot of prosumer level video editing systems at my old work using the MAtrox RT/RTX series cards. The place I work now builds DVR systems for security companies. Those are running dual xeons with up to 4 8-port capture cards recording non-stop.

Installation is super simple, you just pop the cover open, remove one of the dummy plates and slide the card in the empty slot and screw it in. Turn the computer on and when it gets into windows run the CD that comes with the card. Or if you want best performance go to the chipset manufacturer's website and download the latest drivers. Once the computer restarts if it isn't automatically setup for the dual screens then you go into display properties where you will will see 2 screens, the 2nd will be grayed out, just click the check box to extend the display to the second monitor and then set the resolution for that screen and click apply.

Best deals for monitors are the sunday ads if you don't mind doing rebates. Otherwise check Newegg.com

go into the bios and disable onboard video.
