Hunter charged with first-degree homicide
Marinette - A 28-year-old white hunter was charged today with murder in the death of a Hmong hunter found earlier this month in a wildlife refuge near Green Bay, according to online court records.

Authorities found the body of Cha Vang, 30, of Green Bay, on Jan. 6 after he disappeared while squirrel hunting.

Friends had reported him missing the night before.

Vang's death rekindled racial tensions in northern Wisconsin, where a Hmong deer hunter fatally shot six white hunters two years ago. That hunter claimed one of the victims fired in his direction after they shouted racial epithets. He is serving multiple life terms.

Sheriff's deputies arrested James Nichols, 28, of Peshtigo, another squirrel hunter, after he showed up at a local hospital with a gunshot wound. A bond hearing for Nichols has been scheduled for 4 p.m. in Marinette County Circuit Court.

He was charged with first-degree intentional homicide, hiding a corpse and being a felon in possession of a firearm, all felonies, according to court records posted online.

Messages left for Nichols' public defender, Kent Hoffmann, and his fiancee, Dacia James, were not immediately returned Tuesday.

James, 20, told The Associated Press and the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel previously that Nichols said he stabbed Vang after Vang shot at him in the woods. She said Nichols told her that he asked Vang to leave an area where both were squirrel hunting, there was a verbal argument and Vang shot at Nichols twice, hitting him in both hands. The two men then fought, and Nichols stabbed Vang, James said.

Vang's family has speculated that his killing was racially motivated.

His wife, Pang Vue, did not return a message left Tuesday. But shortly after his death, she told The Associated Press that he could not have provoked an attack because he did not speak English.

The family, which includes five children, moved to the U.S. two years ago, Vue said. Vang had hoped to provide a better life for his children than the one he had growing up in refugee camps in Southeast Asia, she said.

Nichols was originally held on a parole violation from a burglary conviction. He was released from prison in 2002 after serving time for burglary and criminal damage to property.

Court records show Nichols was charged in 1996 with breaking into seven rural cabins. The owner of one cabin reported that "KKK" and a racial slur for African-Americans were spray-painted on a bedroom door, the criminal complaint said. While Nichols told investigators that he and a 15-year-old companion committed the burglaries for money, he did not acknowledge writing the graffiti in statements he gave police, the 10-page complaint said.
