Thats what they are for. Never issued to the public.

The Currency notes of denominations above $100 are not available from the Department of the Treasury, the Federal Reserve System, or the Bureau of Engraving and Printing. On July 14, 1969, the Department of Treasury and the Federal Reserve System announced that currency notes in denominations of $500, $1,000, $5,000, and $10,000 would be discontinued immediately due to lack of use. Although they were issued until 1969, they were last printed in 1945.

When I was a kid our nieghbor won $1000 on WZUU (Yeah, I am old) and they were given a $1000 bill. I remember it was from the mid 20's and they were contacted by a coin dealer right away and got $1200 for it.

It was pretty cool to look at.

We had another nieghbor that worked at the Sentry on 27th & Edgerton and she came home with Confederate currency that some old woman tried paying for groceries with. Pretty much worthless but kinda cool.

Binions Horseshoe Casino in Vegas used to have a display of a million dollars. It was 100 of the $10,000 bills. I think they took it down and sold it back in the 90's.

They stop in 96-97, my buddy collects them. Has 8 of them and if they get used the bank would just send them to the feds to get destroyed.

Not anymore... he's nearly 90, and hasn't been in the game for decades.
When in doubt, check eBay or Google for it.
My grandpa gave me some as well, and there was about $3,000 (U.S.) worth of Mexican Pesos, which I found out are worth about 25ยข (U.S.) now, because they switched currency in the early 90's, and you only had a few years afterwards to exchange your old pesos :(

Coop, you can take them to a coin show and have someone do it for you. They will grade the valuable ones and seal them up and label them for a small fee. Any coin dealer in town can probably do it for you too. The ones that have been around a while can def. be trusted. I know a guy but I doubt you want to drive up to the Marshfield area...

I used the coin place on like Hwy 100 and Becher back when my Uncle died. I think it's Derzons or something. I brought him in like 3 suit cases full of coins. In about a week he gave me like $1200 for the coins, and like $600 in change that I could just take to the bank. He seemed honest enough about it.
