my wife was doing laundry tonight and when the washer drained the sewer backed up into my basement. Obviously something is clogged is it most likely the line going to the city sewer or something else? I can snake this right? Where can I rent or buy a snake?

You can rent a sewer machine like he said, or Dale @ AAA sewer and drain cleaning is very cheap and thorough. 453-8082

Obviously if you have a clean out serving that line go through it, or sometimes you can poke it through the floor drain as well, just not with a full size cutter.
You can pull the clean out in the front of the house to make sure there is no standing water also, to confirm where the clog is.
