Would like something I can zoom in on, a considerable distance. What do you guys use? I want to get about 3 times the zoom as the kit lense has, and thats a 18-55. Anyone use a 75-300? What else is out there that I should be looking for?

You have a canon rebel right? If so I would read up on focal length multiplier before you buy.

Regarding lenses I would recommend a Canon 70-200mm IS lens. Great lens with excellent glass. Though it will act like a 105mm -300mm lens on your camera due to FLM.

Tamron makes good lenses too and may be a better option if you don't want to break the bank.

I have a great 28-210 (acts as about 42-315mm using a 1.5 multiplier) a lens that I had from my old cannon rebel 35MM that works great for the few times I use it. The 18-55 is actually a pretty nice lens to have, and now I want a dedicated telephoto lens though.....

Look around and shop prices. The IS lenses are not cheap, but they are awesome when dealing with zoom of that magnitude since every small movement is also amplified.

I have the Canon 70-200mm F/2.8L (non-IS)

expensive and heavy, but I love it.

That thing is burly, but without having IS how clear are the photos? I would be leary of getting a lense like that without IS, and the IS lenses are soo out of my price range its not even funny! And what do they run, about 850 ish?

70-200mm no IS $600 from Calumetphoto.com

70-200mm IS $1700 from Calumetphoto.com

Calumet is usually on the high side so you could probably find better prices.

How blurry it will be depends more on the shutter speed and how you are holding the camera. If you do purchase a non IS system I would recommend a monopod to help steady the camera if you are not bracing your arm like the woman is in that photo.

shot this at 120mm free hand... with practice you dont need IS.
I've had both and it's not worth the money to me.

CrypticGTX makes a good point. You get many different features and obviously the more features the higher the price. Before purchasing consider its use and how often you will be using it. For myself my job requires me never to miss a shot so I want I may need for a lens might be too much for your use.

I don't do anything professionally with mine, but it is a hobby of mine that I spend a considerable amount of time with. The non is lense is a lot closer to my price range, so I think I might spring for it. I don't know how to use half of my camera's features yet though, so I think I need to take some sort of class to understand what everything does etc before I starting buying accessories since I really don't know what I want.

If you are interested in taking a photo class I would recommend looking into a Continuing Education class at Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design. Here is the link. I would recommend this class to anyone that has purchased a digital camera and would like to take full advantage of the techology that is available.
