you can claim a defective spedometer and then you'll have to get it fixed, in that case will cost ya more than a speeding ticket

typically, with speeding tickets like these, if you go to court and calmly state that your speedometer is inaccurate and needs repair (it IS an older car so its more believable) ask them for a plea bargain, see if they will reduce it to: Defective Speedometer. This violation carrys no point defecit. Also, with this fine, they do not make you fix it... as weird as that may be. They don't make you return in 15 days to prove that its fixed or anything...

Ricky Bobby
11-24-2006, 10:29 PM
no didnt ask to see the gun cause i was so pissed my speedo is off by 11mph or so the cop says, i planned on goin to court i just wanted some proof of something before i went so cause im not acceptin nothin but not guilty cause i only owned the car 2.5 months and didnt know it was off like that

88Nightmare

chances are you wont get a not guilty, but like I said, defective speedometer is easily within reach, and also like I said, thats no points, which is usually most peoples concern about speeding tickets.

Defective Speedometer. This violation carrys no point defecit.

How sure are you on this? My father talked to a laywer recently, and a 4 point speeding ticket could be dropped to 2 points for a defective speedometer, and dropped to zero point non moving violation for an extra $100, not including the laywer costs.

This is true. I got a defective speedo ticket a while ago, it DOES carry points. However I got a good lawyer and it disapeared so I have no idea about fighting with it.

Contact the board lawyer. He will fix you right up.

Defective speedometer is a two point violation. If you're worried about it, go to a place that can verify this. Check the Yellow Pages under "speedometer" for a place that will check it. Then you will have proof to show a judge/city attorney and they will most likely drop it down for you.

Better yet, hire a lawyer that specializes in traffic law and he will get you the best deal you're going to get without you running around trying to get your speedo checked or having to show up in court. If it were me, that's how I would handle it.

I was doing 51 in a 25 about 2 years ago. Yeah, kinda fast. It was 3 in the morning, I was effin tired, just wanted to get to bed. I was very decent and upfront with the officer, I explained to him where I was, why I was speeding, and admitted my reason was no excuse to speed and apologized, he came back and reduced my speeding ticket on the spot to 40 in a 25 which brought the price and points down, I went to court, talked with the city attourney, and he reduced it further to defective speedometer, 0 points, but he bumped the price up a little bit.

Realistically, a city can plea bargain however they want, it depends on their mood. Usually, they can drop your points, but the may raise the fine on ya. If defective speedometer carries a 2 point defecit by wisconsin statute, that may be true, but local municipalities can drop the points if they are in a good mood.

Then lawyer up, dude. It's your best chance of getting it reduced to a zero point violation. The money you spend will be worth it in the long run.

go drive by a speed trap on the freeway or something. When your pretty close to them they are almost dead on it seems. Will tell you if it is off 11mph at least. Then you will know if its a case of profiling or not. jmo

I believe it depends on your insurance company whether or not it will check for a defective speedometer violation.

Also if you go to court yourself to fight it I believe most times it will drop to a defective speedo, save yourself money and looking like a douchebag by hiring a lawyer because you were speeding (whether the speedo is off or not). IMO of course ;).
