I'm trying to figure out an issue with a 2001 Audi A6-2.7L turbo. The check engine light comes on/off constantly, I scanned it and p1296 came up. I looked it up and it said it was a coolant temp sensor, however it seems like this is a complicated code. Started asking around and a few people said that the mass air meter could also be defective...?
Any input would be much appreciated.....
Thanks~!
Are you using the Audi dealership scanner or just a regular OBD scanner?
I have a VAG-COM which can read the codes better. You can get on for about 250$ shipped from ross-tech.
BTW- I am thinking about trading my A4 for an A6 with the 2.7t

Mass air was/is a problem with that motor, although a coolent sensor problem would make sense as well if it's on and off depending on the time/day.
Like Al said though, vag will read that code more in depth. Sorry I'm not too much help, but 2 of my friends with the same motor had their mass air replaced, a comon problem among all Audi products.
Badass motor though

Ah but the A6 with the 4.2 is fantastic. Hey Al, You think i could borrow your vag-com to change my tire size?
That specific scanner is the next model up from mine. $350 will get you one of those

Just a semi-basic scanner, but I had the code # looked up in Mitchell......
