is the 5.9 only in the 98? if so why did they do away with it?

Yup, it was the 5.9L Limited... It's pretty much a "Rare" Jeep... My thought is that they put it in there for people that wanted a faster Jeep

Yup, only 98. I just got one in the spring and LOVE it. well worth the money I spent on it. I got mine on E bay for $6500 and had to go to N.H. to get it. yes, it sucks ass for gas, and needs premium. The interior is better then 95% of new cars made today. Has a great sound system from the factory also. The only thing to look out for it the transfer case. They can be expensive to fix. If you want, I can meet you some where and I will show you mine. Also, they only came in three colors. White, black, and the tan color (it's what I got).

ok..so its not a "flawed" engine... what mpg's do you get?

The other weak point is the rear axle.
It is a Dana 44al with a center section (pig) made from aluminum.
Known for housing flex, you should add a truss if you put a blower on it.
The gears aren't standard D44 gears, either, with a different offset on the pinion, amongst other things.
Fun Jeep...the hood vents are the only way to really tell...until you get on it.
They eat gas, but are a scream.
I know a guy who has one with Dana 60 axles and 38" tires under 9"of lift.
Power to spare.
Toss on a blower and you have a silly SRT10 chaser for <$10k.
$6500 is a screaming deal on one...
Some cunts have all the luck...

They run low 14's stock. Mine feels like it. Also, with the 5.9's you get the nicer wheels and the better front grill.

And yes, I am a cunt :rolf

the 99's have 260hp and 330tq... and seem to be priced around and cheaper than any 5.9 i've seen... may have to go with one of these instead...

I'd rather have the 5.9L... 5.9L = Mopar 360 = Made since the 60s... Good motors...

more potential for higher hp from mods...? is there a decent aftermarket for em?

i just want to have a fast fun jeep...that runs 12's..... and can be driven all year around and haul all my crap.... is that too much to ask:)

Like it was just said - 5.9L = basically the same old Mopar 360 was around for 30 years. "Magnum" version with different head/intake design came out in early 90's, was the same pretty much until the end. Lots of aftermarket parts, stroker kits, aftermarket heads, you name it.

You're not the only one, I actually contemplated modifying my '95 Grand Cherokee, since it had the 5.2 (318)... That w/SC = Fun... :thumbsup Plus it had almost 200k, it was time for an overhaul...

Very comfortable and nice to drive (when everything works right), but not particularily fast, and not too easy to work on either (at least the V8s).
The WJ series (99-04) got slightly better over the years, but I wouldn't recommend buying one older than an 02. I have a 99 4.7 limited, and quite frankly, it's a POS. That is why they can be picked up relatively cheap nowadays.

The '98 5.9's are pretty solid, last year of the ZJ series. Not quite a collectors item, but they are much more sought-after by the Jeeo enthusiasts, which is why they are holding their value a lot better than the early year WJ's are.

If I were buying one today, I'd be looking for a 5.9L.

Honestly, I don't see why getting one with the 5.2L (318) would be out of the question, they're relatively innexpensive, and they're great motors... I'm pretty sure they have as much aftermarket stuff as the 5.9L (360)

Let me inspect it and verify the 'stockness' of the rig.
Paper filter, all season shoes, exhaust, etc.
If you can then pull a low 14, I will pay for your track fee and toss in $100.
Put up or sober up...

Sweet. This is going to be the easyest $100 I ever made. :banana1:

Hrmmm should be a low 15, high 14 stock... I'd like to see this as well...

From what I have read it depends on who says it. Moter Trend says one thing, another mag will say something else. Just like the GTP's, some are low 15's, and some almost dip into the 13's from the factory.

I had a 94' LT1 Z28 that ran a 13.7 stock, now that is unherd of in my book. Not jacking your thread just agreeing that cars can be the same but for some reason or another can run completley different times.:confused

I have a 94 w/ 5.2V8 , 3.73s & AWD. The truck scoots. Just bought my wife an 04 Grand Cherokee Overland, has 4.7H.O 5spd auto 3.73s AWD. The Overland is a Grand Cherokee w/every possible option. 2004 was the last year of the previous bodystyle. I find the new ones (WK 2005&up) quite ugly. We will line em up real soon & see which ones faster. The ZJ (93-98) rides alot better on the road but had tranny problems often. The WJ (99-04) look better IMO. If you want a fast suv, either w/ V8 are decent.

http://wjjeeps.com/jmenu.htm lots of Jeep info here.

Being a GM guy, Jeeps are A1. I love the 05+....the handling is far superior to the 98-04. No body roll. The seats sucks balls. This Audi/Benz euro thing in domestic cars is driving me nuts. The seats are very hard and firm compared to the 99-04. The 99-04 overland has the MOST comfortable seats I have ever sat in. As far as the 4.7, we do about 3000 mi/yr towing a double sled trailer and never skips a beat on either body style.

The seats in the 98's with the 5.9 are special. They went all out on the leather and interior. Siting in my jeep is like sitting on a leather lazy-boy. I could do a 15 hour drive with no problem. (other then falling asleep) :)

just an FYI, all the interest in this thread, the Auto Trader this week has a 98 5.9 Limited, silver, the pic looks great, doesn't list mileage. 920-475-6500 6500 BO
