View Full Version : Speed Ratings, going over??

Hey, I'm wondering if anyone has blown a tire due to exceeding the speed rating. A friend of mind told me he was going 140 in an SHO Taurus, and he knew the speed rating was less then a V.

What are the details of exceeding the speed rating?

Typicaly, If you go more than 5 MPH over your tires speed rating, the tire will explode, and you will fly into a ditch.

But thats just what I saw on the A-team. So Im not sure if its accurate.:confused

I've seen it happen both ways, tires failing under what they're rated at and over(which is to be expected). I've also seen some lower speed rated tires go way past what you're supposed to for long periods of time......

>>> MY 'TWO CENTS' >>> It all depends on what your going to do with the car, and ultimately the tires. PLAY IT SAFE! and go a step up on the speed rating if you're getting close to the corresponding speed. Because if you're worried about a tire blowing up you're doing at least 112mph, which is a 'S' rating. That's the lowest an all season passenger car tire is rated at and I gaurantee you having a tire blow at 112mph is not fun........

speed ratings are way more detailed then people think....the rating is the speed the tire has to go for 8 consecutive hours before the rubber begins to breakdown...meaning say your tires are 125 mph rating....you have to go 125 for 8 hrs straight before you should start worrying....you can go over the rating if it's just a short term run...

Ditto

Heat is a major enemy at speed. You can exceed the limit, but heat will kill the tire fast. For short bursts, I can't say too much.

Chuck Norris exceeded the speed rating on a V tire once and it popped. Then he roundhouse kicked a patch into it and proceeded to do 225... backwards. Go figger'...:goof

i did 125 in my ram across nebraska (trust me it took a long long time) and 100 for a couple hours (made a 1030 mile trip in 11.5 hours with stops to laramie wy.) i just have normal load range c truck tires.

worst thing i ever did was me and kev (ponykiller87) were coming back from hunting doing like 90 for 4 hours straight on his bfg all terrains....when we got home you could smell the rubber .....all terrains have a low ass speed rating./...lol

it just doesn't happen much anymore. I did 160 in my old GTP, but c'mon it's GM, it's expected to go that fast. a taurus at them speeds just sounds scary to me.

it's starts to get pretty floaty. however the GTO is like glue yet at that speed.

and as always I was on a closed course on my private airstrip.
if not there, the salt flat behind my parents house.

Well it's true and it did more than 160, but it's nothing close to stock......

WOW, 160mph!!! I had the TA up to 170, but of course it was sitting still on a dyno. Another reason I will never take it back to Borchardts...:fire. As far as speed ratings go, I agree it's better to be cautious than lucky. Either way, tires are tires and can blow for no other reason than to piss you off. I do know that you cannot have 2 different speed rated tires on your car. If you have a "Z" rated tire it needs to be replaced with a Z (for the long haul, a spare is good for temporary trips). At least, that's what I have been told.

That is more for handleing than anything. It is more to match how the tires handle together. Sidewall stiffness and what not.

Where the hell does one find the road to get a car going that fast? :shades

Uhhh I've seen speeds a bit over 160, and it's scarry... Then again, I was in a car that stuck to the road like glue...

And no, it's not American.
