I have a 96 accord with the Vtec engine. If the timing belt snaps, does it take the motor out? It happened and Im just wondering if it's even worth putting a new belt on the car.

I do believe that's an interference engine...
A quick Googling seems to support that theory.

New belt FTW :thumbsup

Im almost positive its a interferance motor.Put a new belt on it and you might be fine. But if you were at a high rpm when it broke then there is a chance some of the valves may be bent. Also when you do the t-belt replace the balance shaft belt and check the balance shaft seal(they like to leak and or pop out, there is a retainer to hold the seal FROM HONDA)If you need any help with it let me know.I have a little experiance with Honda's;)

Getting a head for that motor shouldn't be too expensive. There should be plenty floating around town.

Car is not even worth a new head if it's bad. This is a total winter beater.

I would just try putting a new belt on it. Hopefully the valves aren't bent too much.

96 accord EX...
If the vtec was on, you might be in trouble.

How many miles? Would you be interested in a trade and cash for my integra (if the valves are not bent)?

I'm guessing it was the original t-belt unless the car has 250k on it. According to some honda mechanics I have spoken to, the t-belts on most hondas go around 150k.

220k. It happened when down-shifting. Car made a high pitched squeeling noise then quit. I can see inside the timing cover and the gears are not moving when the engine cranks.

That must have been the original t-belt.
