Jet Car Meltdown at Eve of Destruction

Last Friday I went to the "Eve of Destruction" at Kaukauna / WIR and it completely kicked ass again!! Far too much happened so I'll just post some highlights.

This school bus was set up on its tail and they had another bus come around the oval racetrack and nail it! :rolf

The School Bus Figure 8s are some of the most fun, the drivers basically aim to broadside another bus in the "X" when the opportunity arises.. One bus usually tips and starts on fire LOL! This year a bus entered the race pulling this big boat....

...after 1 or 2 laps another bus got a clear shot and took a full on direct hit at the boat! The boat got bashed and the trailer was completely destroyed!


The best race was the Trailer Car Figure 8 Races.. these are typical figure 8 cars pulling trailers and the goal is to be the last one racing, still pulling a trailer. The other drivers aim directly for the trailers crossing at the X!! Makes for plenty of excitement. This year on the trailers there was a snowmobile, several boats, a few pop up campers, etc. They were all destroyed!!

Now for the best part. :devil At the end they stacked up two wrecked cars from one of the 4 cylinder races (I think), and backed up a jet car to it, and fired away!! They actually did this in 2 piles one at a time, each with its own jet car, but in my photos the second pile is blocked by the first.

Here is the jet car about 2 seconds into firing!! It's about to get a WHOLE LOT HOTTER.... they blast the cars for about 4 minutes solid!! :stare

... If you think these photos are cool, trust me it was at least 10 times cooler in person!! We were probably 50 feet away from where it happened with the best seat in the house. I pretty much sat with my jaw open saying "holy shit" over and over. The noise was almost deafening but completely kick ass. Check out all the hot molten metal showering in the sky!!! You can see the doors and fenders glowing orange! Last year you could see the engine block glowing bright.

I also shot a video when they started to blast it, about 30 seconds long. I wish I had a high quality video camera for this because it doesn't really capture the detail or the sparks flying, but you'll get a feel for it anyway with this video:

Afterwards there was a white hot pile left that was still burning strong 20 minutes later when we left!

EOD rocks...
I haven't been to one in years but they are a blast. Did they do the "go till they blow" contest? The one year I went they had a bunch of cars lined up and the put a concrete block on the gas pedal with the car in neutral. The last car to blow up wins. The one I saw a Chevette one and beat out all the Japanese cars. That Chevette would NOT blow up. The driver ended up taking it around the track and running into the wall and it just kept on running. I think he -finally- got it to blow up, but it did take quite awhile.

That night was pretty awesome! From youre pictures, I would say I was standing about 50-75 feet to your left. I was right in front of the Van Kamp pits (the guys with the bus pulling the boat). Was getting a little worried about the melt down, those flying molten metal parts were starting to get a little close! Was pretty cool watching the bus figure 8 races. Seeing the buses hanging it out through the turn! Most of them sounded pretty sweet too. I'd day, at least 5 of those buses ended up turned over by the end. Trailer races were great too, was just laughing at the crowd in the stands reactons to everything, and the guys that got knocked out early trying to push the boats and campers out into traffic! hehehehe. Well worth the $15 pit passes. The Vandura/Camper just was pretty funny. Couldnt believe the heat from the fireball on the "Dukes of Hazzard" stunt jump! I could feel that like I was standing right next to it :headbang Will be there again next year.
