dude there's SO many things you can do to the shoulder to make it hurt. if your rotator cuff is toast you would have little to NO range of motion. get it checked yo

I had an internal impingment. It isnt exactly a torn rotator cuff but the tendon that goes over the bone that connects to the top of the arm gets pinched in the socket of the shoulder and then begings to tear from the bone. Three screws and a bunch of string plus time away from sports got me back to playing again but I dont have the throwing ablity I use to have with my right arm.

You might also have a torn labrum. which is like this little cup that hold the top of the bone in your shoulder. I've got 2 of those torn from weight lifting.

Speaking as an Athletic Trainer, I will attest to the fact that football coaches aren't very good at assessing injuries. Not saying that you DON'T have a torn RC, but that IF you do, even a blind squirrel finds a nut once in a while.

1. How old are you?
2. HOW did you injure it(describe the situation)? Did you feel a tearing or pop?
3. WHAT are your complaints? (IE how's your strength and Range of motion[ROM], what's your pain like? Does it wake you at night? Hows the ROM at the elbow or wrist? Any pain in the deltoid, bicep, elbow forearm, wrist, hand? so on and so forth)
4. Can you raise your hands over your head?
5. Can you hold your arm out to the side and slighly forward of the midline of the body with your thumbs up? Okay, how about thumbs down?

Those can begin to give an idea of what you may have done (especially question #2) and go from there.

The big thing is to not really **** around and wait. Get to see a shoulder specialist about having it accurately diagnosed. IF it's a torn RC, then immediate medical management is critical...the longer the RC is torn and the shoulder is stiff the poorer the outcome of any surgical repair is afterward, so ruling out RCtear really is important in these situations. I don't suggest a family doctor in these situations as sometimes it may prolong the time until you are seen by someone whose qualified to correctly manage the situation (not always, mind you).

But, the differential diagnosis for these include AC joint sprain/seperation, RC impingment/bursitis, RC tendinitis, Labral tear, Adhesisve capsulitis, Shoulder subluxation, RC strain....

If you'd like a list of MD's, or if your going to be out on hwy 100 one night and like me to see it, PM me.

I had a torn labrum about three years ago. It only hurt when I would jump and reach upward at the same time, reaching backwards (reach to the back seat while sitting in the front seat), and throwing a baseball. Since I want to play baseball again I had the surgery. It was outpatient, arthroscopic and it hurt like hell for about a week. I spent about three months rehabbing and it took me about one year to get my arm strength back for baseball. If you have a torn rotator cuff the recovery time is slightly longer.

Just the kind of post I was hoping for... :thumbsup

I agree on the whole 'Football Coach' thing, which is why I brought my shoulder problem to a Muscle Car Enthusiast Forum to get a 'Second Opinion'. :thumbsup :rolf
I was planning on getting it checked out anyways, but I just wanted to know what I was up against and how serious it is/could be...

-Im 25

-I injured it trying to throw a baseball over 70mph while drunk at a Brewer game, LOL.(I had a bet... I hit 68mph before my shoulder/upper arm was filled with pain). 2 days later, I played softball.. few days later I went golfing, played football, went bowling, you know.... stupid things you don't want to do when your shoulder is full of pain. I dealt with it, and what do you know... the sh!t got worse!! Thats typical 'Me' though.... being an idiot and Over-doing it. Classic!

-It hurts just walking and letting my arms 'swing'. (not SWING swing..., as in how some flaming queer would walk, I mean, just normal 'swinging' of the arms when you walk ;) ) If I just relax my shoulder and let it 'hang', there is pain on the upper rear of the shoulder, the upper front of the shoulder, and even between the top of my shoulder and my neck. When it first happened, there was pain on the outer far side of my shoulder (the right most part of my body, does that make sense?) That pain has since gone away though since the incident at the game 3 weeks ago.

-ROM of my right arm seems OK for the most part. Thumbs up/down extension is fairly painless and I can raise it to the side and front with minimal pain, but trying to raise it behind me gives moderate pain. Above the head is OK with minimal pain.
One thing I absolutely CANNOT do is put my right arm behind me as if I was getting hand-cuffed, and try and raise it towards my left shoulder blade.
That gives the most pain.

Well, I gave a big long answer as to why it is a "definite maybe" as to why it may be a torn RC...damn thing logged me out
