All these cars are from Milwaukee...

This will probably be the worst photo post evar... :)

While I don't like this huge wheel trend, I have to respect it as part of the car hobby. I know Mel from Kandyland Auto in Butler personally, and he takes junkyard cars and restores them from the ground up, while not my style, he does awesome work. I would not hesitate to take my car to him for paint/bodywork, if I could afford it.

Here is some Kandyland cars...

Poor...poor...poor cars. I think if I lived in some of the areas these cars are located I'd spend that cash money on a house and in a nicer area, but thats just me. I see quite a few donks or whatever they are called if I go home on Silver Spring instead of the expressway. Clean cars most times, but tasteless.

You must bring a camera everywhere you go and also roll through the north side alot ;).

Cars are very clean, which I like and respect...but the wheels/stances are 99% nasty, in a bad way :). Hopefully the new trend is stock wheels or something. When wheels are dominating the look of a car...no good. They should accent the car, IMO of course. :shades

I knew sooner or later I would have to explain this "Ridin' Big" lifestyle to the BCM'ers......

Whip (Noun): Any vehicle that you personally own and take pride in the modifications performed to the vehicle.

Technically, everyone has a whip whose car/truck is modified. It's just that everyone has different tastes. You may like them or hate them. Opinions are like a-holes...everyone has one.

The first vehicle I ever saw that was "Ridin' Big" was two years ago while I was in Miami during Black Beach week. I asked who the owner was and it was this stocky white guy. It was a Kandy Green Cutlass LS on 26" wheels. I asked him why did he do it and where did he get the idea from. He told me that it was an evolution. He pointed out to me that "Rednecks been liftin' their cars with muddin' tires on cars, so I just changed the game and put big rims on mine." The reason he did it was the same reason most guys do stuff to their cars. Women. And damn he had a lot of 'em. I mean golden tanned island women and a few Brazilian ladies on his jock. Nice.

The rest of the story goes it spreaded quickly to Atlanta, then the rest of the "Dirty South" caught on. It's simply how big of a wheel and how much can I invest to make my "whip" stand apart from everything else. I ain't saying you gotta like what is being done, but you have to respect it. Calling the lifestyle "ghetto" or "hood" is f'ed up. Hell, calling anything other than "the norm" ghetto or hood is messed up to me. I don't think anyone on this forum would come up to me and call me ghetto. Would you? First of all, I'm not, second of all if you did would be pickin' your front teeth off of the ground. :fire

If you don't know, I work for Davin Wheels. We invented the spinning wheel. No, not the cheap imitations you see mostly today. Our wheels range anywhere from $6,000-50,000 for a custom set.

Yes, there are many customers who currently enjoy the "Ridin' Big" scene and it doesn't seem to be going away.

Personally, it's not for me, but I do respect it. I don't have to like something to respect it. That's the difference. This shiznit could go on forever. Dem's V. Republican's; Packer's V. Bears, Jesus V. Satan, Muslim V. Christianity. Where does it stop? It's different and it is what is it. If we respected one another there would be world peace too.

Blah blah blah, I couldnt agree with you more but the GHETTO fact of it is, these vehicles are NOT being built safely. I wouldnt ride in one, its not my style at all. BUT I think its cool that these guys go so big. I do NOT think its cool that they run stock brakes, with wheels that large the rotating mass is INCREDIBLE, and UNSTOPABLE when it comes to a stock rotor or sometimes on these older vehicles, all wheel DRUM brakes.

Would you want to be " Ridin " in front of one of these vehicles when you have to stop abruptly? Good luck if the guy behind you aint got big brakes, all I got to say bout that

To me it is the equalk of slapper bars, side pipes, angel hair and shackles. It's just 30 years later and the same thing: People get caught up in the "lifestyle" and copy what someone else is doing instead of being a free thinker. Fashion instead of function very similar to the Harley people I deal with "I do it because I want to be an individual like everyone else!"

I guess if you see it on MTV it must be cool!

You're still calling it ghetto and that's a problem to me. Answer these following questions:

1. What was the difference when guys are "Ridin' Big" on Mud tires with their trucks and/or cars on 15-16" wheels with factory brakes?
2. Is is ghetto when someone has a 600HP turbo/NA car on 300HP factory brakes?
3. If someone has a lowered suspension (air or coilovers) and its slammed to the ground, (the oscillation [bouncing] of the suspension system can increase the stopping distance on an unsmooth road) are they ghetto?
4. If you have a 11 second street car without at least a 6 point cage, are you ghetto?

The answer to me is that these scenarios are no more safe than anyone else with a compromise in their suspension, chassis and braking systems. To generalize something as ghetto is wrong especially when the word is thrown around so loosely.

I think the "ghetto" term is based more upon the origin of the trend than anything. If anything the current use of "ghetto" should be offending Polish Jews from the 30'/40's.

The rest of the things have all been slammed on here also. Hillbilly. Ricer. White Trash. Unsafe and numerous others.

If it becomes a mainstream trend maybe people will call it something else?

Urban Money Pit?

Good points made by each *side*, IMO.

Big Boost, you certainly respect the style if you work for a wheel maker that sells such wheels ;).

I just have a feeling 5-10 years from now people will be looking back making fun of this trend(more than people currently do)...but hey, I could be wrong.

As far as that Cutlass being done right, putting a Monte LS header panel on it is different...but different doesn't automatically gain my respect or look good...yuck. Also trimming the fenders to make the wheels fit doesn't sit well with me, if you need to start cutting up the car to have them work....could be a sign its too big. :durr I will agree with your main point, that he has larger brakes to help stop a much larger rotating mass.

So I take it that pro street or dragracing in general doesn't sit well with you either? Seeing that most of the cars in that very huge and profitable industry are setup by having to clearance for MUCH larger rear tires by trimming fender lips, extending wheel openings, or narrowing frame sections. Or, hows about cutting a hole in da hood for 2 fours, a blower, or even a HUGE pro stock hood scoop? What about chop tops and customs, either you love them or you hate them. That guy putting an LS monte clip on his cutlass is no different than what the lead sled guys did like using buick side trim, packard or desoto tail lights, and cadilac hub caps on 49-50 Mercs. My dream custom is a chopped 51 Merc convertible:headbang . Personaly I don't care for the big wheel look thing, but that's just me, but I do respect their individualism different stokes for different folks. The whole aftermarket auto industry is built around individualism, even if a trend side steps into tastless phases. It happened in hotrodding and is still going on, shit look at the ratrods I wouldn't ride in those things!!! You want to be a 12 year old about this conversation and turn it into an argument, then here we do.

GHETTO is a word I and Most other people use when describing vehicles as done cheap, and not safe or correct. It has NOTHING to do with the color of the driver, where they came from or grew up, or their rim size.

1. It IS ghetto to lift you truck and put 44 inch tires on it, with stock brakes. Why? Cause it WILL NOT STOP.

2. I dont know anything about going fast, but I would imagine if you have that kind of time / money into the car that the brakes should be upgraded yes. If it needs to stop better/faster, then it needs to be done in order to protect both your investment, and yourself along with those driving around you. Its ghetto to build a fast car and not be able to stop it fast, yes.

3. Every vehicle I have besides my motorcycles is on air suspension, and NIETHER of them 'bounce' any more then a stock vehicle. The impala is a bit stiffer, but does not 'bounce' and it stops the same as it did stock. My caddy has a soft ride, like a cadillac should. I converted it to front disc brakes, so it stops great but even before the suspension does not affect the cars stopping at all. Want to get into a war with me about that, then get it on.

4. Maybe, like I said I am not a big horse power kinda guy.

I believe the conversation was about big wheel cars, and because a few people used slang you got your panties in a bunch. I have just as much respect as you do for those that build their vehicles how they want, but it is stupid as ****, I repeat STUPID as ****, not to upgrade the brakes when you have BIG ASS rims.

My Caddy doesnt have seat belts, is that ghetto? My toaster only works on one side, is that ghetto? My shoelaces are different colors on my work shoes, is that ghetto?

I hear ya, I personally absolutely love drag racing! The look, the sound and everything that goes with it! Some guys mostly ricers give me shit about my car and make comments like :it's only good for going down the dragstrip, skinny front tires taking turns at 10-15mph. I don't care though because I did build it to go down the strip so I don't need to go around corners any faster than the posted speed limit.

"You want to be a 12 year old about this conversation and turn it into an argument, then here we do."

".......because a few people used slang you got your panties in a bunch."

I think you're the one acting childish right now player.

Anyway, the problem I see is that you and other people are quick to call anything ghetto that they don't like or different from the "norm". I told you that you used the term loosely and I see that I got under your skin by the stupid insults directed towards me. I see you can dish out criticism, but definately can't take it.

Believe me, I use the word ghetto like everyone else and probably more. I don't call everything I don't like ghetto. Don't confuse what you dislike by calling it ghetto. That's all I'm saying. Damn, can we all get along?

GOTTA LOVE IT! :rolf

A few months ago, when I was young and naive, I didn't know what "donk" was, so I typed it into a google search....

http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=donk

Then I saw this on the sidebar...:stare

And I have not been the same since....:rolf

Don't confuse ghetto with something that you think is ugly.

big wheels on cars can look nice if done right. anything can look nice if done right. you don't have to like it, but as its been said before, to be a true car enthusiast, you have to at least respect other peoples ideas and styles, but you don't have to like them. They like riding high, you like going fast. perhaps you like riding low. Maybe they don't like going fast or riding low. It's a 2 way street when ya think about it.

You used um first, pal. Why didn't you answer my questions, I answered your questions / assumptions of opinion. If you honestly think adding HUGE wheels and not adding HUGE brakes is HACK, then I feel sorry for you :thumbsup

Now that's what I'm talking about. If all the cars in the street or at a car show looked the same, don't you think life would be kinda boring. Hey pOrk do you know the owner of the black primered 63 caddy with the red metal flake chop top? That thang is WILD!!:wooo I love it!!
