how have never heard or have saw this before??? didnt you guys learn about this sometime during school.... those are called locks. they move boats across land usually like pictured in the link.

I don't know if that is technicaly a lock. At least I usually think of a lock as a pool that raises and lowers the water in order to meet the level of water in the next strech of waterway, like in the Panama Canal. I've never seen one that goes over land before. Not one that elaborate before, either. But I'm no expert by any means.

correct, that is not a lock. they used to do this with train tracks, this is more efficient. as for it not crumbling? forged steel, lots of it. the overall stress isn't REALLY that more than most, this of like the Golden Gate bridge and how many cars are on it at one time....
