I have a 1986 TA with a TPI and I wanted to modify my engine, but I do not want to mess around with all the computer stuff. I was wondering if anyone knew a good tuning shop around here.

what cha got done so far??? the MAF cars have always been known to be pretty mod friendly for the most part anyway

Most likely you have a 305 TPI. If so, I would save your money and put it towards a different engine.

meh, restore your 86 and buy my '88 for a fast toy, 355 already included.

It had cat-back on it when I bought it, but I am thinking of putting headers and y-pipe on.

I mostly want to keep my car stock looking, I want to make my TPI faster.

well the stock TPI w/ MAF has always been known to be mod friendly.

first order of business would be to build up a 355 or better on a stand, and be gone with that 305.

sadly '86 was known for being the weakest year of tuned port fuel injection.

honestly the stock 305 isn't worth spending any time on if you want a quick car. my girlfriends 2006 mariner that thankfully is leaving tommorow for a 06 Mustang (cylinders not yet decided) totally whupped up on my trans am. it was sad. very sad.

don't say that on thirdgen.org they will defend the 305 4ever.

BAD LS1

After they have been replaced with something bigger, they do make great small boat anchors and easily push out of the back of pickup trucks doing 70 mph!

you can put a 350 in with minor mods with no prob. you might want to get little bigger injectors though i think my brother bought inj from summit for $29.
I'm pretty sure they were accels

Hey 305's aren't that bad! I mean they can give newer 4cyls quite the run for their money.

I stand corrected. They DO serve a purpose after all...

And you should see the sparks, tumbling, taking out of mailboxes and chunks of asphalt that fly when the 70 mph assult happens!

Sounds a lot more exciting than anything it could accomplish while mounted in a vehicle!

I've been told that not many places tune those computers. you'll probably have to send the computer out.

that gives me an idea of what to do w/ the left over 305...

I want to stick with the 305 to try and save on gas. If I could find a cheap enough LS1 and throw it in, that would be great.

I also don't have the money or the time for an engine swap

Well if you don't have the money, don't concern yourslf with wasting money on new Proms. Just do simple stuff that will be able to be used on a new 350 someday. Like exhaust and intake work. Or even something fairly simple like 1.6 roller rockers, pullies.

All that can be done before really needing to change the Prom IMO on TPI motors.

Or better yet just start saving the coin for a 350. Especially if you'd like to do an LSX swap someday. Pointless to waste money on mods that can't carry over to the new engine.

So porting and polishing the intake and cams don't usually involve changes in the PROM

not unless you're going up in the cubic inches

again you can put a 350 in with moderate mods nothing to radical.
i owned the same 86 305 tpi. I did a little reserch on it and then i had to get rid of it. the computer will compensate with the O2 sensor.
