Well I'm thinking of getting a lizard or sumthing cool as a pet. I'm not sure what to look for tho. It's definately gotta be somthing that can be handled. Also somthing that can eat vegatables and not just insects.

This is the local place I'll be going:

What about a turtle?

Well I don't think it can eat veggies but I had a chameleon and I thought it was the coolest thing ever. It changed colors right in front of your eyes and when it nailed a cricket with its 6" tongue it was awesome, partly because he himself was only about 6" in length. He was inexpensive to buy and maintain, I have really considered getting another one but just haven't got around to it........

Green Iguanas don't eat any insects, just vegetables & fruit.

Also thee Bearded Dragon eats vegetables 75% of the time.

Both can & like being handled, but the iguana will get very very big (5-6ft), while the dragon will only get -maybe- 2ft long (females smaller), and can be kept in a 55gal tank.

Reptiles seem cool as a pet but unlike a dog these things want NOTHING to do with you.

Skip the child's play and get a croc! :goof Friend used to have one (along with a Nile Monitor). Went to his house and he'd take them out to freak me out. He was a little off center though... ;)

Where do you guys get this stuff locally? Any where in the area that sells lizards/snakes? I know some local pet stores have a small selection but anywhere else?

yellowpages.com look for Reptiles... there's more than ya think!
Hoffers is usually good though, they've been around forever.

Pet World is probably not the place to go... any place that keeps 40+ anoles in one tank should be avoided like the plague.

I settled on a Bearded Dragon. And it meets what you are looking for just fine.

That would take about 75 years.

I would suggest a turtle.

Tortoises and other animals which live in dry climates will stink up your house.

The advantage of a turtle is that you use water in the tank setup along with a water filter. Even a small submersible filter will keep your place from stinking at all.

BTW- if you are interested, I have a 25 x 25 x 18 inch tank I built a few years ago. It also has a custom stand. I originally intended it to be a fish tank, but the glass at the bottom was not thick enough to support 50 gallons of water. It could easily handle 6-10 inches though. I could also build a matching lid for the setup if you are interested.

Price: I'd charge you about %70 of the cost of a 50-55 gallon manufactured stand/lid/reptile cage/light. (reptile cages are cheaper than aquarium tanks).
One other thing: my stand is much strongerthan anything available at the pet store.

That link ships them live. It's expensive shipping costs as its special over night or whatever.

Well I wouldn't expect to ship them dead.... I'd just rather look and see in person before dropping that kind of money. I know there's a big reptile convention in Chicago twice a year. Heard you can get some pretty nice deals down there..
