anybody know anything about bicycles?

ive been looking at a few few of the bike shops in town and trying to decide on what to get.

ill be using it for the most part to go to work 2.5 miles away. but maybe farther trips like downtown madison. i may go on some state bike trails as well.

im trying to keep the price of the bike <$750 and trying to decide if i should get a road bike or a mountain bike....what the pros and cons of either is and what bike would be best for me.

I looked at the Giant FCR3 downtown at budget bicycle and it has excellent reviews on consumer reports.

i also looked at trek and a few other bikes.

u guys have any advice?

Well if your going to be riding that thing for the next 6 months (through winter) I would recomend a mountain bike. There are places online that sell tire studs to make it easier to ride in snow/ice. Also I would recomend the front suspension, makes things alot easier on your shoulders. My new bike has disc brakes and I would recomend them to everyone, they seem like a novelty thing but they are so much smoother than the standard kind.

I have a front suspension mountain bike with cross country tires on it which makes it easy to ride on asphalt. I would go that route.

For your purposes, something like a hybrid type/mountain bike would be great...in general it would have the features of a comfort bike (IE, more upright seating) but with mountain bike tires that are geared for the road, a front suspension. Comfortable, yet quick enough to not make commuting a chore...and yet able to do some light off-roading.

A giant sedona is a great bike for that purpose.

Road bike is out...
I thought of you on a road bike in spandex and threw up in my mouth...
Mountain bike is out...
I doubt you would make it out of the driveway...
Something with a motor...

Then again...

On a mildly serious note...go with an Aluminum MTB with front suspension and cross tires.
Can't go wrong.
Well...unless you shave your legs and wear spandex...in which case it doesn't matter if you drive a D20 dozer...its still wrong...

I'm still trying to get past $750 for a bicycle... I think my good olde huffy was a whopping... $75 from K-Mart... 6 years ago... And, well at least for me it gets the job done...

How about a chopper bicycle? There a lot of them in Madison. There are clubs that go for planned rides. Just for s & giggles go to rebirth of cool forums and take a look. You can get a spoiler for $600 w/ sptinger front end. Alotta guys love that bike. Check out my signature video.
