Gateway MX6128 with a Philips cdr/dvd combo. Now onto the issue, everytime I try to copy files from a disc, I get an error that reads I/O error unable to copy files. It even looks to be working for the first 5 minutes then the error comes up. I did try a firmware upgrade and that didnt help.

throw it up against a wall and then see if it dares deny you.

Is the disc scratched? or does this happen with every disc you try?

I used to have problems with a laptop cdrom that I had. The problem was that the laser had a "dead spot" on the slide where it moves. I moved it back and forth manually over that dead spot and then pushed it back to the reset position and i felt a click. Then it worked good as new. Not sure if that'll help you or not.
