I'm wondering the same, but I wonder about running Linux. I know that it is free, but rumors say that it is also more stable than windows.

sony viao laptops rule. I got one myself. 16" widescreen, dvd burner, 80gig hd i believe, it may be bigger, intel centrino processor, love it! wouldnt change a thing about it, except more ram. its only got 500mb, but upgradable to 2 gigs i believe.

Sony or Dell is the only way I would go. Look for deals here: http://www.gotapex.com/

I would not touch Compaq EVER. I have never had a decent compaq, and pretty much everyone I know that has had one hate them. HP purchased Compaq, so I have questions about them now too. Dell's are expensive for what you get.

I would personally choose Toshiba or Sony. When I was looking around for a new laptop or PC a bunch of IT and computer guys I know over at Harley Davidson all told me to get a toshiba. Ended up getting a big Sony Desktop, but I would have got a Toshiba if I needed a laptop at the time.

Building your own to suit your direct needs is usually the cheapest when going with a desktop. When looking for a laptop toshiba is probably the best out there right now. Dells are ok, IBM is slowly dying.

My brother could build yah one, exactly for what you need it for and it would be half the price of a dell or what not with all new parts, new case, etc. He loves doin side jobs, let me know if your interested.

Well we got a NEW Computer. Its a desktop and its a Gateway GT4022 with 1024MB memory and 200GB hard drive....
It's a media computer and its pretty fast so I don't know if I wanna do hi-speed yet... But it suites my needs for web browsing and such.
Picked up the complete package for a little bit more than $700.00.

We're happy :)

Good buy...

I would of chipped in earlier if I would of noticed this thread. Compaq & HP laptops are junk, from my dealings with them. Sony laptops are good til something breaks, then dealing with Sony's tech support sucks! Toshiba laptops have been the best for me, with no problems what so ever, and trust me, they got abused!!

For desktops I'd go to a smaller computer shop and go with a "house" brand. Otherwise you always have your Gateway (which you got) or a Dell, which both seem reasonable in price and don't seem like bad machines. All I know is that some of the bigger builders use cheap stuff in their pcs (eMachines, etc...)...

Well e machines is a bargan basement type of computer....good if you are going to puts around on the net or do a little downloading, but not good for much else...I sell HP and compac computers, and those who have bought them from us have had no real problems with them, however still get the service plan we sell (Geek squad has got nothing on this). The better ones are the dual core processors with at least one gig of memory, but can be built up for more.....

HP and Compaq are the same company so I have no idea how some of you guys are saying HPs are good.

I've had a Toshiba for several years now and its treated me good. Heavy usage too.
