What faulty component on a 1989 Mazda 626 would cause a high HC count? What are potential causers of this problem?:confused

to high HC count is running rich. alot of carbon. air filter , plugs, wires, maybe a bad FPR. just due a tune up. how much over were you?

basically what everybody else said probably mainly the cat but if you want to do the cheep stuff first and it wasn't really high over the limit i would do plugs, wires, air filter, pcv valve(if its cloged this can cause it also, just take it out and shake it if you here a rattle its good)but its cheep id just replace it.

i used to work thier(was thier for 3 years) any other questions feel free to ask.

I had a Ford Contour that spit out a high hydrocarbon reading a few years back, not really high, but enough to fail. If your reading isnt way over the limit, get yourself new plug wires, a set of Bosch Platinum plugs, o2 sensor and throw in a bottle or two of Heet.....you should pass no problem.
If your car is way over the limit on the HCs, I would bet it's plugs, wires, o2 sensor AND convertor.
Good luck, let us know what happens.

The 2 bottles of HEET on a regular neglected tune up should do the trick on a 1/4 tank of fuel beat it on the freeway to warm it up good and if it don't pass you need a cat been there done that!

Clean the Maf also it can never hurt and its free. Thats if it has a Maf. use some carb cleaner and spray it off.
