Im going to be buying a my first mountain bike later this week. I was going to get a Trek 4300. My question is should I spend a extra 100 dollars and get disc brakes or are the friction breaks going to hold up fine ? Im planning on some paved tracks and possibly some off road tracks but either way it wont get to extreme cause im just a beginner so anyone out there with any experience please let me know. Thanks

The V-brakes should hold just about anything you throw at them, plus are easier to maintain. If you want an upgrade on anything, make sure you get adjustable shocks for the front at least.

adjustable shocks FOR SURE....you'll need them if you want to ride the bike on trails

TTT im looking at buying tomorrow or the day after so im trying to get as much input as possible. Is there anything other than the bike and a rack that I should look at getting at the same time ?

I recently got a new bike from Sports Authority and it has the disc brakes front and rear. Im very happy with them so far, they dont seem any harder to adjust than normal ones and the have much smoother braking.

Get a nice gel seat cover or something like that and of course the water bottle, tire pump, lock... I picked up a nice set at target that had it all in one pack for $20, not super high quality but it really doesnt need to be.

The 100 bucks is VERY VERY VERY worth the upgrade. Would cost HUNDREDS to upgrade later. I say do it!

I've got a trek 6700 and went sans disc option...used the money I saved to upgrade other components. I figured I wouldn't be either a) screaming down the mountains in colorado or b) going through mud and deep streams.

The most technical stuff I do is out in the kettle morraines and on some of the trails next to the milwaukee river...I've had my bike out in aspen a few times and those are the ONLY time I wanted disc brakes...otherwise, I like the relative wieght savings and simplicity of the standard set-up.

V-brakes are plenty strong.......they will toss you pretty easy. Id say disc is a waste unless you do alot of downhill riding.

Oh yea, a gel seat is NOT going to help your ass from hurting after the initial 2 or 3 miles. I wouldn't follow that suggestion :)

Huge bottle of Ibuprofin for the aches you will have...or Scotch!
