Unique.

That concept is nothing new. Nerds have been making similar LED devices to go on bicycle wheels for decades now. As for that price, I do not think that there is any major overhead in the production of that other than the wheel itself; raw material.

I'm guessing a $100 processor per wheel and $30 worth of LEDs in three colors.

+ assembly which in turn means workers....
+ R&D costs.....its not free to develop something new....plus all the tooling that will be necessary to PRODUCE these wheels. I used to work for a plastics company. We couldn't even THINK about producing one plastic part until we had the tooling. We had extrusion dies that cost $15-20K a piece!

I don't think there is enough demand for an automated process to produce these wheels especially at this price. So how do you think they will be assembled? Martians? Robots? No major overhead hey....you must have slept through the respective classes in high school then.

I am familiar with the prices of tooling. How much do you think that the tooling to make a rim costs?

Outside of the rim itself, the other parts are probably injection molded. There may be six sets of lights per rim, but they are probably identical. Piecing it together is probably not done by $60/hr union guys (I wonder if they speak english). Add a few screws here, some wiring there, a pre-programmed PLC, and presto.

I wonder what the net profit is on one of those.

Tooling costs money, materials, assembly, hardware, and R+D, that all adds up very fast. That is a transparent resin that has to stand up to heat and abuse, more than likely polycarbonate, which can be an expensive plastic. Not to mention the software that had to be designed to run it, that is never cheap.

I didn't know any plastics guys were on here, I'm just getting out of school for plastics processing/ITM.
