Just checking into a TV to go above the fireplace where I'm moving to. Got area for about a 42-46" widescreen LCD or DLP tv. So what's some good stuff? Don't want plasma since the area I have to work with is a corner area and I can't toss it up on the wall. Although do they have stands for a plasma to stand up with? Not a floor stand, just something on the bottom.

I have a 65" rear projection that I am plenty happy with. My brother has a 52" DLP. I like it alot. Works better for his room becuase he has wide seating, so the viewing angle is better with DLP.

One think I would look for in a HDTV is a fast tunner. I'm not sure if such a thing exists, but I find it highly annoying how long it takes to flip from 4-1 to 6-1 to 12-1 etc.

A big feature with my tv is how well it stretches 4:3 tv to 1.85:1, 2.22:1, or 2.35:1 aspect ratios to fill the screen. Many tv's will do a piss poor job of it and you'll notice towards the wide side of the screen images get overly "fat". A good processor will do a better job stetching the entire image, not just the center.

thats what my uncle (who sold me his 65") went with. Only thing is, I would recommend no natural light in the room. (ie: no windows)

works best with flat black painted walls other wise you get alot of light reflection from white walls.

2nd disadvantage: You cannot turn the projector on and off for short periods. Bulbs dont last long and they cost plenty. It's not ideal for casual TV watching.

Farm Truck and I had a projector in the living room on a white wall. worked great when we could shadow the living room from sunlight. The projector is coming later for the second bedroom as a "movie room". I'm serious, the place I'm moving to is perfect and I have everything already sketched out for that movie room :) It WILL have a projector

This is just for the outside viewing area. Since it is a WIDE area, with viewing at a somewhat extreme side angle, what's gonna be best? LCD, DLP, Plasma

You need to put that 42-46" area underneath your front tires, quit buying tv crap and get the car running! lol

Around Christmas I bought a Toshiba HD195M or something like that - 62" DLP 1080P, yes P not I and couldn't be happier. Damn near as bright as a plasma, great black, excellent color and awesome picture. Far cheaper than plasma, front bulb changeable, etc. They were at that time going for like $4200 at Best buy type places, got it for $2700 at Butterflyphoto.com by checking prices on CNET.com.

I would definetly stay away from the LCD rear projection technology. Horrible screen door effect, terrible blacks, and a dim picture.

As far as 720 progressive DLP goes, right now, there are only a few good sets. The HLR series Samsung sets are AWESOME for 720 progressive resolution. I have the HLR5067W (50") and it has been great. Before it, I tried the Sony KDFE42A10 LCD rear projection and its ability to never produce a true black and its overall lack of shadow detail made me return it. Then I tried the Toshiba 46HM96. What a god aweful TV. The cooling fan was loud as hell, the DLP chip wobulation shows up as an extremely grainy picture, and colors were very oversaturated. I took it back immediately.

For 1080 progressive DLP, the Toshiba HM195 DLP series sets are the way to go, but nothing under 56" is available. Keep in mind, these 1080 progressive sets are somewhat useless right now as they rarely accept a 1080p signal if you are lucky enough to find content. They do work better for 1080 interlaced images.

In your 42" size range, check out some plasmas. No maintenance or bulb replacements are required and the viewing angle is A LOT better.

EDIT: Just read your post about an exteme side angle. DLP projection doesnt even sound like it would be good for you. Check out the Sony KDLV40XBR1 40" LCD Flat Panel or the Pioneer PDP-5061HD 43" Plasma. You will be much happier with one of those over a projection if you need a good viewing angle.

If it ever gets released :durr

The only TV's that could actually show that 1080p in full resolution right now would be the 56 and 65" HP DLPs. The Mitsu, Samsung, Tosh, and Sony 1080p sets dont receive a 1080p signal over HDMI (what PS3 will possibly output)
