Ok, I am computer literate (might not be able to spell??), but this one has got me.

What is happening:
While using computer (time could range from 10 minutes to 5 hours) I notice a internet bump (My AIM and YIM need to restart and I lose all chat), so I thought it was the cable modem. This could happen within minutes apart or hours apart. Just recently I had the bump and my iPod was connected through a USB port and it crashed the HD on the iPod (Had to restore it).

My Question:
Is there a way that I can monitor when this bump happens? Is there a way to determain what needs to be fixed to correct this issue? With that would this be software or hardware related?

Thanks for any input,
Dan

Believe it or not, lots of messenger disconnects happen because your Flash is out of date, and it doesn't jive with the newer code they're using in the gay ads they place (aim) or the avatars & such on both aim/yahoo.

Check out Macromedia's Site (http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer) for the latest version.

It's not always 100% the answer, but I know for a fact it is one of the reasons.

Could also certainly be spyware related.

That is what someone else said so I ran my program and knocked out like 81 hidden. We will see what happens.

Well, now I had a security update available and I downloaded it before resetting the computer after the removal of the spyware and the update needed a reboot. Did the reboot and now the computer resets automatically after the windows xp screen continuously and does not even make it to windows. I am doing searches but comming up dry. My guess is that I need a boot disk, but can I use the on from my xp professional?

You could try the event viewer to see if Windows logged any error. Go to Start - Run - type in " eventvwr.msc ". Look for any red X's and if there are get the Event number go to microsoft or google and search the number to see what's going on. Usually what I do for unkown problems. Otherwise just keep scanning for virus'. Hope you did open the "Febuary Price" email, it's a virus.

Sorry, just see that now. As long as you have XP on your system of course any XP boot up disk should work.

I looked at that and tried to use the recover portion and I got to the point where it gives me c:/windows/ and is asking me what to do. I don't know what to do. I have never had to do this in the approx. 10 - 18 years (comador 64 days) that I had computers.

you MAY have had advanced spyware that will connect you to a phony windows update site, which imbeds more virus' and other stuff. i've removed it from more than a few systems. when it gets you to the "dos" with c:/windows, you should be able to type Run, and it will boot. in theory. otherwise get a windows XP system disk and run the repair program.

Can you boot up in safe mode at all? Hitting F8 on startup, just before when the windows screen is supposed to appear. If so, boot up in safe mode and if that works to let you into windows, only the basic utilities will be on. At that time scan your pc with the programs you have. I'll ask some other IT people I know too for you, it'll give me something to do...hehe :goof

Recovery Console

to repair a damaged system (like to fix boot problems).

Insert your Windows 2000 / XP installation CD-ROM and boot from CD-ROM.

Windows 2000/XP:
On the "Windows 2000/XP Professional Setup" menu, select "R" for repair.

That should work.

Umm no. Recovery console is more or less a dos prompt. Unless you know what you're looking for, it's going to be useless to you. I've seen this particular thing happen many times, mostly when I use an image made for another motherboard, or after a SP2 update. The only way I've ever fixed it was using the XP install disk, use it to boot, at the first menu, do not hit R for recovery console, hit enter ( I think it is) to "install". Then it will go and detect previous installations. When it comes up with yours (prsumably c:\windows) it will ask if you'd like to overwrite the current install or attempt to repair it. Repair it at this point. It will look like it's doing a fresh install, but it's really repairing it as long as that's what you selected. After that, you'll be back at the baseline update of whatever your install disk was at. You may have to reupgrade to SP2, and all that but this should keep your installed programs and files intact. If you have nothing you care about on the computer, just blow it all away and start fresh, it's easier, and better.

Thank You, this worked. I did however have a error "could not load the tape controller" Don't know what that ment, but it seems to be working.

Now we will see what happens when I use the IM's.

Well, I found out that is was not the Spyware program, nor the Windows update, but Live update for Norton Antivirus. Just did it to the laptop and that original disk for that will not fix the problem, hopefully my XP Prof. for my main computer will.
