Im looking at doing this also. If you got to J-body.org theres lots of good info. Gm is going to be comming out with a kit for the 2.2 j body. Im sure it will bolt up to the hhr with some mods.
Otherwise do some research. Im looking at a Hahns Turbo kit. They put down around 230whp. I have a auto 2.2 cavi right now with a rk-sport Underdrive pulley and a drop in K&N. I want to go with the hahns kit. It all comes down to tuning software to make it run good seeing its a daily driver. Looks like megasquirt might be the answer for it right now. Hp tuners is slacking.

Still awating the relese of the GMPP blower. Sayed to be 2500-3k. But you can get the whole cobalt/redline motor with the blower for around 3500. So basically price is all talk right now.

Not to mention that theres been talk of this blower since 2002-2003 when the Eco first came out. And guess what...STILL NO BLOWER!!!!! GMPP just keeps pushing the date back further and further. There are plenty of guys who got sick of waiting and just went with a turbo.

I would seriously consider going turbo if I were you.

Not to mention Bill Hahn Jr. is a regular poster on jbody.org and is ALWAYS available/willing to help with any problems and help improve whatever set-up you have with the ecotec. Very helpfull and friendly.

Some quotes from ecotec owners:

"GM is delaying it AGAIN! I was supposed to get this as well but I'm glad I changed my mind and went the turbo route."

"Unfortuantly I heard 3 grand for just the supercharger kit...but the whole 2.0L ecotec w/supercharger is like $3800.WTF"

Im talking with Bill in maybe getting my car as a test car for the AUTOMATIC trans. I WANT this kit really bad but when I emailed them out of the blue they sayed they dont have one for a auto cause it cant handle it. Well after alot of reading on the .org i posted and found there are quite a lot of people running turbo/gm 2.4 blowers on auto cars. Well the 2.4 guys are pretty much set beacause they have tuning from gm changing the shift points and such. While the ecotec blower isnt out so theres no GM tuning. And this is hahns issue with noting having a ecotec auto hairdryer out because of the lack of tuning. If damn HP TUNERS would hurry up and get the program out we would be set. At the time I have a 2800 stall converter for my car and a trans cooler im going to install when my camaro comes out of storage. So I told him I have that and would try and call GM Tech Line and see if there is anything they could do of if they have released the Ecotec blower reprogram. If i could just get some software to tune the damn car life would be GREAT!

i think chevy high performance has a "little evil" project going with the cavy and the hahns turbo.. it ran like high 14s or somthing. with slicks teh kit has hit 12s and higher boost. the ecotec blocks can handle around 500HP with stock internals.(the CHP mag has not gotten out of the 14s yet.)

i also say go turbo. more potential.

lol. Professional drivers that work for a magazine cant get it out of the 14's...but teenagers/people in their low 20's with DR's, the stage II kit @ around 10 psi, and nothing else can run mid-low 13's fairly easy??? LMAO :banana1:

I think the Saab turbos are very popular with the Ecotecs since they used/use the same block for years?
I remember reading that in more than a few places.

But i have not seen anything from GM yet that they have released, our work is going to be dealing more with GM performance parts, Im sure i could be able to find something out

It's not released yet.

http://www.gmpartsdirect.com/results.cfm?singlepart=1&AddPartNumber=17800003&partnumber=17800003

If you put it in you're shoping cart you'll notice a little red star next to it...mean speacial order or not released yet. I've heard that it's supposed to come out late this month...but this type of talk has been going on for at least 1 year.
