I hear the term, but I don't know the specifics of it.

gas will eventually separate, the crude oil itself, and the other parts. its turns sour, partially acidic, and will cause rust.....

time period?

quite awhile. i stored a bike with gas in it for 2 years, it was fine. as long as the vehicle is moved or started up from time to time, the gas will "mix" itself again. they also make additives that will keep it from separating

Octane ratings will also diminish with time too...so while you may have put 93 octane in the tank in the winter, may be considerably less come spring...and if your car is sensitive to low octane, it'll show.

What's a rough guess of how much octane the gas will lose over winter? 6-7 months

What's a rough guess of how much octane the gas will lose over winter? 6-7 monthsit honestly depends...based on several things including the actual fuel mixture, how much gas is present (so degradation occurs quicker in the lines vs. in the tank), and the weather/temperature...

...but it's safe to say, that it can be fairly significant (IE 4-6 Octane points)

You can effectively stop the octane degradation w/ a fuel stabilizer...you are not really stopping it more than you are just slowing it down considerably.

In reguards to gasoline, I had a car with the same tank of gas in it for over a year and the thing started right up. In fact, I started up an old leaf blower that had not been run for over 5 years with the same old gas since the last startup.

like i said though with the leaf blower, if you shake it up, move it at all, the gas CAN mix again or stay useful

Mabe we can jump on the trunk lid of a car till the tank gets stirred up! :D
