i would say a circular polarizer is good to have and a UV filter

UV filter just to protect the lens glass. If you scratch the glass on your lens, its junk. You scratch the UV filter, you throw it away and get a new one. Any brand will do...

Circular Polarizing filter - enhances the sky and colors in general. Reduces glare on glass allowing you to see through it without a reflection. Reduces reflection on cars...a must for cars. Make sure its a CIRCULAR polarizer....the filter rotates allowing you to control the reflection on the car you are shooting. Its like magic!

thats about all you need for a digital SLR....anything else can be achieved VERY quickly in Photoshop

This stuff is all greek to me but I did just get a cheap digital...it's a Canon A520 4 megapixel, I got it just for documenting stuff as i take apart my car, but it seems to take some good pictures and i've been playing around with it more and more latley.

PS- Linear PL's rotate also but don't play nice with many AF systems. However if you have a non-rotating front element (like my Sigma does) you can get away with a cheaper Linear PL filter. Otherwise Circulars are for AF and Linears are for Manual Focus lenses :goof

I have never seen a rotating linear polarizer. :( I also heard that the linears won't work well with the digital sensors creating more chromatic aberration in certain situations, like backlit subjects like tree branches when the sun is setting for instance.

I'll have to show you mine sometime :thumbsup Admittedly the Linear can play tricks on the AF system at times but works just as good as a C-PL in most situations. I can't say that I have noticed any more or less CA with a PL over a C-PL but I suppose it would be possible to have that scenario using either given the higher contrast lighting situations you are talking about :confused

possibly....I am just going off what I have heard about. Never had a linear on my D70...only circulars. I have a photography friend that I use all the time to pick his brain on what works and what doesn't. He is a 65 year old guy and has literally "been there done that." :)

Ok, I'm going to revive this old thread with a question from a super noob when it comes to pics. I've seen quite a few of yellow wagon's amazing pics on here, and I want to start taking some pics of my own. My camera isn't all that great.. Canon A95. I was looking on EBay at adapter tubes to get a polarizer on the camera as you suggested. I see they sell two different sizes. 37mm and 52mm. Does is really make a difference which size I get?

I'm sure I'll have some more questions once I get a filter and start taking more pics.

Scott

The pic in my Sig is my best to date IMO. :)

I'm not aware of a polarizer that can fit on your camera.

Polarizers are threaded and go on the end of a lens. You have no threads.

There's a chrome trim ring around the lens area, and a "barrel" goes on there that accepts filters etc. There are other mfgr's also of course. I don't know how well they work. The adapter from Canon directly is $20, and then you buy your filters etc.

That's a link to one on Ebay. I figure for what they cost, it can't hurt to give it a try.

upconverts you to a 52mm

I guess you get that and then find yourself a 52mm circular polarizer

Definately go with the 52mm. The filters will be easier to find, more versatile (if you ever buy an SLR for instance), and you will have lots more filters to choose from. Plus in some instances they may even be cheaper than the 37mm.

his step up ring should work just fine. Like posted at 52mm...that is a very common size and should make finding filters readily available. I'm not sure how a polarizier will work with a point and shoot camera?? Anyone have any experience? I guess technically it should work just fine. Get it and let us know!

Actually back in the day of using an HP C320 I just held the PL in front of the lens and looked at the digi-display until I had what I wanted. Worked pretty decent actually :thumbsup
