Wauwatosa - Milwaukee Ald. Michael McGee Jr. was arrested on municipal charges of disorderly conduct and resisting arrest after an altercation with police late Tuesday, Wauwatosa police said this morning.
Wauwatosa Police said they arrested McGee in the 6100 block of W. North Ave. at about 10:30 p.m. Tuesday, but declined to provide other details.
McGee, 36, could not be reached for comment this morning.
Bill Arnold, the public relations manager for the Common Council, provided some details to the Journal Sentinel. Arnold received the information from McGee.
According to the information provided: McGee had gone to the Blockbuster video store located at W. North Ave. and N. 61st St. on Tuesday night, shortly after the store had closed. McGee had planned to meet someone there to give that person a DVD on non-violence, which had been produced by Time Warner Cable.
After a time, an employee of the store called the police, apparently jittery about why the car was waiting in the parking lot. The police arrived and told McGee to move along.
After the police left, McGee either rolled down his window, or got out of the car and shouted to the store clerk something to the effect of: “Thanks for calling the cops on me.”
After McGee drove away, he was pulled over by the police about a block away. According to the information provided by McGee, the alderman was pulled out of the car, handcuffed and “was struck by a closed fist” on the side of his head. His head also struck the police car, according to the information he provide Arnold.
He was ticketed for disorderly conduct and resisting an officer and taken to the police station. His car was towed.
His father, Mike McGee, said in a radio interview on WNOV (860 AM) that there would be a protest outside the Wauwatosa police station at 10:30 a.m. Thursday.
Wauwatosa City Attorney Alan Kesner confirmed that video store employees called the police about a suspicious car in the parking lot after closing Tuesday night.
“It doesn’t seem unusual that people who are leaving the store would be concerned about a car in the parking lot,” he said.
Wauwatosa Mayor Theresa Estness said that “it does not appear there were any inappropriate actions by police,” she said. McGee is “making allegations. That doesn’t make it true.”
She said she plans to attend the protest Thursday morning.
“They are welcome to their peaceful demonstration and protest,” she said.
A written statement from the younger McGee was expected to be released later Wednesday.
He was elected in April of 2004 and is serving his first term on the council.
